APSA is pleased to announce BETTER benefits of the 'hot and sweet' R&D opportunity for “Screening of Tomato necrotic ringspot virus (TNRV) and Capsicum chlorosis virus (CaCV)-resistant sources in pepper germplasm” to seed companies led by Dr. Channarong Seepiban and his team from the National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC), NSTDA.

The total project duration is 2.5 years to screen for CaCV and/or TNRV-resistance sources in pepper germplasm using mechanical inoculation protocol in greenhouse condition and to evaluate sources of resistance to TNRV and/or CaCV using thrips inoculation in greenhouse condition. Germplasms used in this study are from World Vegetable Center, New Mexico State University and Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN), USDA. 

Below is the summary for a new revision of the proposal;

  1. More lines from USDA Genebank; together with the lines from New Mexico State University and World Vegetable Center will be around 200 accessions (maximum is 300 accessions).
  2. The participating companies can propose the list of the interested lines available in the Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN), USDA to be used in the project. 
  3. All germplasms used in this project can be requested from the owner of the germplasm through MTA. Company will need to sign the MTA directly with the owner of the lines. The MTA will be shared to the participating companies.
  4. The accessions collected from Thai gene bank (Khon Kaen University and TVRC) will be excluded from the APSA – NSTDA proposal.
  5. Only companies joining the project will get the full report with virus screening technique. The report will be shared to the public only after 3 years the project is completed and the virus screening technique will only be shared to participating companies, not to public. 

Terms and condition to request the resistant germplasms and MTA are dependent on the owner of the germplasm which is not covered in this project.

​Under the memorandum of National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) and APSA, NSTDA has provided 50% budget contribution to this project. Companies joining this project therefore will only pay 50% of the total budget as shown in the project summary.
