Dr. Fiona R. Hay
Senior Scientist, Crop Genetics and Biotechnology Section
Department of Agroecology, Aarhus University, Denmark
Profile:
Dr. Fiona Hay is a seed scientist with a particular interest in applying knowledge of seeds to improve the conservation and management of plant genetic resources in seed genebanks. She is leading the Seed Quality Management Community of Practice as part of the Genebanks Initiative of CGIAR. Areas of research include optimizing germination protocols, understanding inter- and intraspecies variation in seed longevity, how to optimize seed quality, and the application of new technologies in genebank operations. Dr. Hay is Chief Editor of the journal, Seed Science and Technology, published by the International Seed Testing Association, and President-Elect of the International Society for Seed Science.
Abstract:
Storage Technologies and Practices for Maintaining Seed Quality
From the time that the seeds first equilibrate to ambient environmental conditions, following closure of the vascular connection between the maternal plant and the developing seed, the clock is ticking. The seeds have a certain lifespan, which is modulated by the conditions they encounter up until they germinate. Processes that occur between harvest and germination include processing, drying, packing and storage; these should be done efficiently and under conditions where seed lot viability and vigour are maintained at high enough levels for subsequent sale and/or use. In this presentation, I will talk about the principles underlying seed storage to give the audience a greater understanding of the factors they need to consider in their seed operations.
Mr Michel Devarrewaere
2022 APSA Awardee of the most influential seed technologist in the APAC Seed Sector
Ex-Vice President, East-West Seed
Profile:
For more than 34 years, Michel Devarrewaere has dedicated his working life to improving seed quality in Asia through a combination of persistence, innovation and dedication. Michel recently retired from his role as Vice President Seed Operations at East West Seed group and is now a free lance consultant sharing his seedmanship knowledge. During his long career , Michel has overseen numerous projects putting innovation and technology at the forefront for the betterment of farmers and consumers in Asia. He is recognized for his active role in introducing innovation and technology in Asia, including seed coating, seed Priming and modern seed processing and seed storage which are now ubiquitous in the region. This was in addition to his role in pioneering Quality Assurance measures that were developed and implemented in-house, for example using DNA techniques to check the genetic purity of the seed. He also introduced vigor and seed health testing. He has placed great importance on East-West Seed’s laboratories being run at international standards and seeing through the adoption of ERP software for East-West Seed companies
