The full name of the inaugural event – which was held at the Embassy of Malaysia, Bangkok – was “Malaysian Durian Fiesta 2018 — Inaugural Malaysian Whole Fresh Fruit Durian Promotion In Thailand”.
Presided over by H.E. Dato' Jojie Samuel, Ambassador of Malaysia to Thailand, the event showcased fresh produce from Malaysia, with special emphasis on whole fruits of the premium durian variety, “Musang King”.
The Musang King durian, also known as ‘Mao Shang Wang’ in Chinese or ‘Cat Mountain King’ in English, is presently the most popular and sought-after durian in Malaysia.
In his opening address, H.E. Dato’ explained that the event marks the inaugural export of whole fresh fruit durians from Malaysia to Thailand.
“Thailand has graciously allowed market access for our durians to enter the market this year,” H.E. Dato’ Jojie said.
Prior to this year, since 2011, Malaysian durian imports to Thailand were restricted to pulp, frozen and chilled forms of the fruit.
This year marks the 60th anniversary since diplomatic relations were officially established between Malaysia and Thailand.
The full version of this article, including more details about the Musang King, will be featured in Asian Seed & Planting Material, Volume 24, Issue 4, due for publication July/August.
