Mr. Surya Rao Rongali is a techno legal expert with more than 22 years of experience working in agribusiness, seed and crop protection chemical industries. Surya currently holds a Lead – Seeds & Traits Regulatory role at Syngenta’s South Asia Headquarters in India overseeing Field & Vegetable crop seeds regulatory legal and agriculture technology management. He is also working as Director, Devgan Seeds and Crop Technology Private Limited (DSCTPL), Hyderabad. Surya is known for his expertness in regulatory legal and agriculture technology management in Biotech, PVP, LTO, FTO, Biological Material Movement (import & export), Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) under Biodiversity Act, Plant Quarantine and Operation etc. He has very good understanding of Seed Industry End-to-End operations, Seed regulatory framework in the Asia Pacific Region. Surya as Chair of Seed Regulatory Group of FSII / Crop Life India (CLIN) for last 3 years successfully leading PIC & MAT (ABS) negotiations with the National Biodiversity Authority, issues of Plant Variety Protection (PVP), Plant Variety Registration (PVR), Seed Licenses, Plant Quarantine Operations for Import and Export, Seed Bill, Implementation of QR Code on seed pouch (Seeds track & Trace), etc. He is also successfully representing Syngenta in several industry associations at Region, Country, and Province level
AbstractSeeds: End to End Security
Seed industry has significant responsibility in food security to meet increasing food demand for an increasing world population. Investments in agriculture is very much in need for bringing new innovations to address increasing challenges. To attract investments in agriculture, countries to have robust a mechanism for protection of Intellectual Property and protection and enforcement mechanisms. In this presentation, I have tried to discuss about present IP landscape for seeds in APAC Region, possible Intellectual Properties involved in different stages of seed development and commercialization, and best practices to be adopted for good management of IP in Agriculture for end-to-end seed security.
