Eiji Hatano is in charge of domestic and international affairs related to biodiversity and utilization of genetic resources at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Japan. Prior to current post, he served for more than four years as a project coordinator at the ASEAN Secretariat, managing and implementing public-private partnership capacity building project in the food industry and agriculture sectors for ASEAN countries. He was also an assistant professor at Nagoya University and arrived at Yangon University for two years as a visiting faculty member, where he was involved in teaching and research in the field of law. He also spent two years lecturing and researching in the field of law in Yangon as an assistant professor at Nagoya University and as a visiting assistant professor at the University of Yangon in Myanmar. His areas of expertise include biodiversity, genetic resource, environmental and resource management in the Asian region.
