Mr Zhou Xusheng currently works at the International Market Development, Wuhan Qingfa-Hesheng Seed Co., Ltd. After graduation, Mr. Zhou has been working at QF for 12 years and is responsible for hybrid rice technical services in Pakistan. From 2010 to 2015, he traveled to all major rice production areas in Pakistan, investigated local cultivation habits and farmers’ demands, and carried out local experimental demonstration work. Zhou was able to deeply understand varieties’ performance and explore cultivation techniques through numerous field work and practice. He also organized training sessions for local farmers to improve their farming techniques. Tens thousands of local farmers were able to benefit from the sessions and apply new technology knowledge to gain high yield.
Thanks to the solid technical service work early stage, Mr. Zhou soon realized that simply carrying out the experiment and demonstration was not enough. Zhou quickly grasped that more in-depth research was needed to support the ongoing change of the market and meet the needs of farmers. Under Mr. Zhou’s leading effort, Qingfa set up its own research and development center in Pakistan, conducting systematic research on hybrid rice, canola, and vegetables. In 2018, Qingfa R&D center was included National uniform yield testing for rice , becoming the only foreign funded national trial station in Pakistan. A joint research station for overseas hybrid rice was also established between Qingfa’s R&D center and Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Hubei Province.
Abstract:Value increase on downstream agricultural industry through seed technological innovation
Along with rapid growth on economics, problems with food security have risen in the recent years. Goal of agricultural products is not limited to supply of enough food and clothing as people begin to pursue agricultural products with higher quality. However, high-quality agricultural products can only be achieved by continous innovation of germplasm resources and optimization of cultivation technology.
This report is based on the actual seed trade cases from Wuhan Qingfa Hesheng Seed Co., Ltd: through the innovation of breeding technology and germplasm resources combined with downstream processing industry chain to increase the added value of agricultural products. Judging by the demand from the target market, the corresponding grading system is established in the agricultural market to determine suitable agricultural products and ways to improve variety quality. In addition, after understanding the demand of downstream processing enterprises, suitable and reliable varieties are selected by target breeding. Through contract farming, good varieties are introduced to seed enterprises and farmers, giving them competitive advantage and gaining greater profits.
